The President of Greece, Karolos Papoulias, has awarded Dr. Mohamed Awad, Professor of Architecture at the Alexandria University and Adviser to Alex Med, the Order of Merit for his role in preserving the architectural heritage of Alexandria and establishing new cities characterized by solid planning and good design.
Dr. Awad is the former Head of the Arts Committee for Preserving Architectural Heritage and one of the most prominent Egyptian architecture experts. The event ceremony was held at the Greek Presidential Palace in Athena in the presence of the Egyptian Ambassador Ahmed Fouad al-Badawy and several prominent Greek public figures.
This is the first time an Egyptian has been awarded the Order of Merit at the Greek Presidential Palace. It is also worth noting that Greece has been paying the governorate of Alexandria special attention ever since it was founded by Alexander the Great. In addition, a large Greek community still resides in Alexandria and the Greek Patriarchate can be found there as well.
