The BA Information for Africa (BAIFA) Unit, in collaboration with the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN), is organizing a specialized regional workshop entitled “The Foundations of Open Science: Concepts, Principles, and Regional Application” on 5 and 6 November 2025, in the Delegates Hall of the Library’s Conference Center.

The workshop aims to build regional capacities and explore the frameworks necessary for applying the principles of open science, which are based on transparency, collaboration, and access to knowledge and data for all.

The workshop seeks to attract a wide range of stakeholders in the academic and research sectors, including leaders, research support officers, librarians, researchers, faculty members, policymakers, and university students.

In addition, the workshop aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute effectively to institutional policy alignment, in order to drive innovation and maximize the societal impact of scientific research in Egypt and across the Arab world.

The workshop program runs for two intensive days. The first day focuses on the theoretical basis of open science, addressing the global movement, UNESCO recommendations, open access concepts, FAIR data principles, and necessary infrastructure. The second day shifts the focus to regional implementation and cooperation pathways, including lively sessions on national efforts, mechanisms for developing effective institutional policies, discussion of common challenges, and identification of a regional roadmap for capacity building.

It is worth noting that there is a special discount for university students on the workshop registration fees.
